iOS Tips #1 – Requesting desktop version of sites in Safari

This will be the first in a hopefully on-going series of short posts with some tips, tricks, features and general help on using iOS.

So, first up – Safari.

Ever been viewing the mobile version of a site and thought “I really need to see the full desktop version”?
Most decent sites provide a link to their desktop version but it can often be difficult to find.
iOS8 adds a new feature to Safari to simplify this.

Tap inside the address bar (where the website address is shown – i.e. “http://m.facebook.com/”).
Now swipe down, starting your swipe on the web page itself. Note that if you start your swipe too near the top of the screen you’ll bring down Notification Centre instead – this is NOT what you want.
This should show you two options at the top of the page, one of which is “Request Desktop Site”. (The other is a quick way to add the site to your favourites, also very handy!)

Now, I’ve had mixed results with this. Facebook worked perfectly, for example, while BBC News just kept loading the mobile site. I suspect this is down to the method the individual sites use for redirecting the browser to its mobile version, but I would think most sites should work fine.
